We tried out Nutrient Survival Food Storage
When it comes to emergency food storage, you want to make sure that you are getting the highest nutrient foods possible. That's why we were excited to test Nutrient Survival Emergency Food Storage. This line of food is marketed as being one of the highest quality and healthiest emergency food supplier and we've heard it tastes good. But they all say that right? So, how does it hold up in reality? We tried it out and here's what you need to know:
Tasting your Emergency Meals are Important
Usually, people will purchase their freeze-dried meals and store them away in a cupboard or pantry (which provides such a great relief to know you're covered!) but then it's cooked and tasted for the first time when an emergency strikes. This can be anything from a natural disaster to simply not having time to go to the grocery store for a week. Either way, it's important to have food that you've tried out and know that you will actually enjoy eating. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with a lot of food that you don't want to eat in an emergency situation.
Nutrient Survival claims to be different from other food storage companies because they focus on nutrition as well as taste. This is a big selling point for many people, myself included. So, how does it actually taste? We were pleasantly surprised! The meals are easy to prepare - just add water - and they taste great. We tried the Triple Cheese Mac and the Homestyle Scramble to start, and they were both great! You can see our taste test video below.
The Triple Cheese Mac is prepared by adding hot water (cold water works too in a pinch or an emergency!) The ratio is 2:1 food to water, you simply mix it up and let it sit for 5 minutes. The cheese flavour was very good and the texture was nice! Some food storage companies end up mushy, which was NOT the case here.
Nutrient Survival’s Homestyle Scramble was my favorite meal. It's also prepared using water (hot or cold) which is how most of Nutrient Survival Emergency Food Storage is prepared. You mix it up and let it sit for 5 minutes. I am a big potato fan and really enjoyed this, I would eat it on a regular basis honestly. It consists of potatoes, eggs and peppers. The peppers were very flavourful and the consistency was really great.
Overall we were both very pleased with the taste and ease of use of Nutrient Survival's Food Storage. If you are looking for a food storage option that is easy to use and tastes great, we would highly recommend Nutrient Survival!
Packaging and Shelf Life
Now let's talk about the packaging. All of Nutrient Survival Emergency Food Storage is made in the USA. The packaging is high quality and designed to withstand just about anything. That's important, because you want your food to be safe in an emergency situation. The last thing you want is for your food to get wet or damaged in a flood or other disaster. Nutrient Survival's emergency food storage options come in either super convenient single servings or #10 cans, based on what you need. They also have a "grab and go" bag full of different just add water meals for emergencies. They also carry no prep needed single serve meal bars for your convenience! Forget about clif bars, try out their cookie meals!
The single serve pouches are great for throwing in your bug out bag, backpack during a hike or keeping in your car. They have a 15-year shelf life, so you can be sure your food will be there when you need it. The #10 cans are perfect for long term food storage. They have a shelf life of up to 25 years. That means you can stock up now and be prepared for anything that comes your way.
Nutrient Survival also carries your basic pantry staples to have on hand in case of emergencies or just as backups incase you run low at home. Keep their Powdered Vitamin Eggs and their Powdered Vitamin Milk stocked and ready to go. They will keep in your cupboard for 25 years.
How does Nutrient Survival’s food compare?
A lot of other emergency food brands require cooking the food for 15-20 minutes, which isn't necessarily ideal in an emergency situation. So having the option to use cold water is a huge plus.
Valley Food Storage is one of those companies that taste great and are really high quality, but you do have to have the time and equipment handy to cook the food.
Mountain House is one of the other survival food companies that use the just add water method, however it does have less protein than Nutrient Survival foods.
Peak Refuel is another company that provides the just add water method and tastes great, however they only come in single serve options which may not be convenient for larger families or extended emergencies, they are also considerably more expensive.
Overall, Nutrient Survival is reasonably priced, high quality, nutrient dense, tastes great and comes in a variety of packaging to suit your needs best. We highly recommend it!
